The Malaysian new car market is up 4% on a record year in 2012 to reach a new all-time high 655,793 registrations. Local brand Perodua remains the most popular carmaker in the country thanks to sales up 4% like the market to 196,071 units with its market share slipping just under 30%. Proton is down a further 2% to 138,753 sales and 21.2% share vs. 22.5% last year while Toyota is down a harsh 13% to 91,185 units, seeing its market share go from 16.8% to 13.9%. Reversely, both Nissan and Honda are up a spectacular 47% year-on-year to #4 and #5 respectively, with Nissan hitting its strongest ever annual volume in Malaysia. Ford is up 50% to reach its highest annual sales in 20 years, Mazda is up 45%, Kia up 64%, Audi up 119% and Land Rover up 56%. Thanks to the arrival of the locally-assembled XV, Subaru is up a whopping 1945% to #24.

There are still no models ranking for Malaysia, and this for almost 18 months now, because the Malaysian Competition Commission considers it an offence for car companies to share historical sales data with their association. According to Motor Trader Malaysia, “the Competition Commissioner said the reason is that such sharing can be detrimental to consumers as it can lead to an increase in parts prices. Ironically, this is an instance where the companies are willing to be transparent – which is what the Competition Commission should be happy about – and they are ordered to keep their data secret from the public. We understand that it has been a year since the MAA filed an appeal for a waiver on the matter so its members can share the data but the matter seems to be proceeding at the same glacial rate as the move towards better quality fuel.” Well said, I say!
